DO NOT WANT? (But it’s CAKE - and that’s no lie!)

It’s not like I was meaning to watch this show at all, but I gave it a shot… =P

The first episode of Antique Bakery was hilarious, in all sorts of intentional/unintentional ways. On one hand, there was so much melodrama in it (organ music??? And I totally expected Tachibana’s parents to freak when he said he was opening a gay bar bakery, but instead they offered to invest in it XD) that I would’ve rolled my eyes at if I wasn’t too busy laughing at how its absurdly intertwined with the yummy characters cakes XD (”Woe is me, I had a bad past - now I’m going to open a bakery!” “Woe is me, I can’t box anymore - *r@pes eats cake*!“)

Cake pr0n

On the other hand, this show actually fulfilled a something I was thinking a while ago that I never thought would ever come true:

But I do wonder if one day perhaps we’ll have a WTF BL show featuring a non-bishie male lead who spends his time in gay bars stalking prey… *shudders*

Well, the non-bishie part goes out the window because there’s no such thing as a non-bishie male character in a show obviously aimed for non-male viewers. But I really never thought I’d actually see a gay bar in anime that wasn’t meant as a direct parody, ever (and it sure as hell was more entertaining than the sleep inducing 2 episodes of Bartender I tried) much less Shinjuku 2-chome (which I really just learnt about from this show. BL = educational?)

What’s this, a homophobe in this BL setup that’s not likely to be converted to ‘the other side’? (Or is he?)

But what someone like Shin wants to know is of you may want to know is, Is Antique Bakery gay enough? Well this episode itself blows all gay quotient in anime ever, for the very fact that it actually focused on what may or may not be what the gay scene in Japan is like, and the character in question here is more in line with the openly gay (with flamboyance levels under control) guys in RL rather than them angspots in denial plaguing the likes of Junjou Romantica.

But wait, who wants to watch a gay documentary when there’s all them flowery BL shows out there that feature all the ‘actual’ raunchy boy on boy loving that we could ever dream of wanting?

This is why subs are ‘necessary’ XD

Well, if your more into the entire false fantasy of entertwining cheesy romance with flimsy premises and the inevitable buttsecks that is yaoi, then from the looks of it, the only thing Antique Bakery will end up offering you is the drama/lulz/organ music (and Miyano Mamoru. Yes this line is meant for you, friend who does not read this blog but thinks the guys voice is ‘teh sex’ :P)

And that sort of answers why, in my quick glance at this show, there doesn’t seem any way that this show is going to end up like your typical run-of-the-mill yaoi/BL show. The fact that you can’t really switch Ono/any of his potential prey with an equivalent character of the opposite gender without compromising the essence of their relationship should be a point. Granted there seems to be some BL-like antics coming up later, but at least I’m hoping it actually comes off as being ‘believable’ for once and not devolve into a pile of cheese(cake :P). And please no buttsecks for the sake of buttsecks -_-”

Well in any case, if the melodrama doesn’t do it for me, there’ll still be the cake… Mmmm…

P.S. Funny how Junjou Romantica mentioned all those places to visit in Osaka, but not Doyama =P

P.P.S. Now it looks like all I have left yet to see in BL is an actual flamboyantly faaaabulous protagonist (though shows like Code Geass make up for that). Who knows what’s going to come out in the future that’ll make me blockquote this one…
