So Long S.A., Thanks for the Tadashi
Posted by issa-sa under Spring 2008, Special A
So I lied about dropping S.A. a while ago. I’m dropping it NOW instead.
…what needs to happen more often in the show.
I won’t beat about the bush with my gripe with this show: I’m freakin’ tired of Lelouch Kei (and to a lesser extent, Hikari, but only as the source of Lulu’s Kei’s obnoxiousness, though he does pretty well by himself anyways). Yes, I’m sick of his non-relationship with Hikari, but more than that, I’d rather the two not get together at all (which is everyone else’s excuse for sticking with this show - can’t wait till these two finally become rabu-rabu! - unless you know, they like it or something) because he’s so stubbornly obnoxious and she’s so blah. And I’d rather not talk anymore about Kei because I’ve already ranted enough about him.
You’d have more of a chance if you were a wild animal.
I’ve practically wiped most of the first 10 episodes out of my mind (not too difficult a task, at the end of the day, the show itself is so flimsy and lacklustre there’s not much to remember), all I know is that every episode, even if it was ‘passably’ funny (after the first 2 episodes, my level of expectation dropped drastically), I’d still end up having that “why am I still watching this???” bad taste in my mouth. Then afer some time, it just simply slipped my mind to watch this show at all, and when I finally remembered, I was at least an episode behind, so I thought *shrugs* “Why bother? It’s not even worth the raw practice anymore…”
Then I find out that they were finally giving the side characters some episodes, so I ended up checking those out since, as 1-dimensional as they are, I actually find the other members of the S.A. class to be the only spark of something likeable in this show. In the end though, Ryuu’s episode was ‘not bad’, if only to see Ryuu as more of a dependable-like character (who makes sense, animal obssession not-withstanding), who takes good care of his pets Jun and Megumi (who collectively have the presence of… a mute girl and her twin brother in a show full of 1-dimensional unfunny characters, go-figure). Too bad that part of him is already obvious from every other episode of the show -_-” His ‘darker’ “I’ll beat the crap out of anyone who dares touch my beloved S.A.!!!” self though, wasn’t very inspiring and I was rolling my eyes at the explanation they had to come up with for his being in the last position in class when he really has inhuman test-scoring skills.
RyuuXMegumiXJun doujins anyone??
Well so much for those 3. My impression of the show was already stagnated anyways, and I once again lost the will to continue with this travesty of an Ouran wannabe (as much as I say it’s futile and utterly depressing to have compare the two, it seems that S.A. is actually trying to emulate what made Ouran so darned awesome in the recent episodes - only to end with epic fail). Then I find out the next episode is about Tadashi - the only comic relief in the show that actually does his job! (Fails next to Maid Guy, but that’s a tough act to follow) I at least owe it to the remaining character I like to watch another episode…
And I honestly have to say I loved Hikari and Tadashi’s ‘date’ episode! It had everything I’ve always wanted in a good date myself - good friendly company (well, being just friends helps -_-”), good food (I love my seafood fresh :P), getting together to mock all them stereotypically mushy couples around (though these two are so clueless, it’s not like they realized what they were doing XD), visiting places off the beaten track (LOL at poor Akira who just had to tail them - yes, an actual LOL from me in this show!) - but most of all just plain having fun without the stupid distracting thought of “Oh dear, what if he/she doesn’t like me for saying/doing this…” or “You’d better be paying for this meal...”
In other words, I loved everything about the ‘date’ that didn’t make it a date. Hah. What can I say, I’m sick of being put through the mushy beat around the bush antics of young couples in wuuurrrrve, already, it’s not only sickening, it’s so gotten OLLLLDDDD… (Yes, call me a cynical old bitch/bastard, I know it well enough). The end of the episode with Tadashi’s mom was predictably blah, but Tadashi already made up for it in the rest of the episode for being the fun guy that he is
(Shimono Hiro needs more roles!!) I’ll just ignore the fact that Kei had to return in the end to spoil things.
So on a final note thank you Ogata Megumi Kei’s dad for getting your pain in the ass son off the show for a one decent episode, you may very well have made my very last episode of S.A. the best one for the entire series.
Yea, sorry to say, the one good episode in the series isn’t going to convince me to continue following this pile of doodoo now that the focus returns ‘rightly’ to the dunderhead non-couple… Those of you who still enjoy this show for all its mediocrity, I commend you for being more easily satisfied than I’ll ever be. Just remember to drop me a line the next time Tadashi gets an episode, and maybe, just maybe… I’ll watch that one episode, and that’ll be that ![]()

mmm… you really have good points. i wonder why I’M still watching this. it’s probably because i’m one of those people who, when i’m at the point of dropping an anime, i will get one good episode and will opt not to drop it. i think i’m naive to think things WILL get better… :*

Haha, I never even picked this series up
And I can’t believe I clicked on Comments off for the Bunny Channel thing! Argh, silly me!

I have not seen this series so I would not know why would you want to drop it. But usually I would get annoyed with a show if the flow of the story is awkward and boring.

I wonder if I made it as far as you whether I’d just keep going, but I canned it around ep. 4 or 5. Couldn’t stand it. The very premise of the kids in their special class was a little gross to me, but beyond that there just weren’t any laughs and I see no reason to actually feel involved in the characters.
But there’s an easy cure for the S.A. that ails you, it’s called 24 minutes a week of Itazura Na Kiss.

@biankita: Yea, this is the one time I’m dropping at it’s good point, really. I figured that once I squeezed out a Tadashi episode out of this one I’m through with it once and for all!
@blissmo: If you did blissmo, you’d want to kill all the characters in an episode of Bunny Channel
@The Sojourner: Awkward, yes. Boring, yes. Annoying, definitely yes.
@otou-san: Yay, now I get twice the enjoyment out of watching Itazura since it no longer has to compensate for S.A.’s incompetence

100% agree.
I dropped this one after the first episode, but when I was really bored one night I broke down and decided to catch up with the show. I found myself actually laughing aloud at some jokes which convinced me to keep watching.
- Kei is unbearable. His crush on Hikari is supposed to make him likable but he just comes across as a mean, superior tightass. He’s grown on me a tiny bit, though.
- The other characters are thinner than a coat of paint. They each have a single obsession and no personality.
- The gooey “sweet” moments where color fades out and there’s a rainbow effect — I assume these are supposed to be sentimental and touching, but really all they make me do is scratch my head in bewilderment. None of these moments are earned. Rather, they bore.
- Overall: DISHONORABLE FAILURE. But I still get amusement out of the occasional joke, and the unusual way the Kei/Hikari thing is handled has kept it bearable. I guess that’s why I’m still watching.
I mean, what else do I have to watch? Nabari no Ou is too slow-paced to be watchable and Vampire Knight’s last episode was so badly animated I felt like someone had recorded dialogue over pictures of paper cut-out dolls.

@reslez: Yea, if I wasn’t so bitter and more lenient, I’d say that they at least try to make the show funny (but it’s rather lazy, so I’m too lazy to laugh as well) and Kei isn’t as tightassed as he first started (but I still hate him, and always will). All the jokes in Tadashi’s episode were really JUST decent enough, but I had to laugh because it’s Tadashi
Perhaps if I was pained for something to watch, I’d probably continue watching hoping the side characters get better episodes (and having those hopes crushed)… Or I could just pick something from my backlog instead. Methinks I’ll do the latter.

I’m still watching this, despite my loathing for the main characters! Just busy with my mom this week…w00t for sightseeing. I feel like I’m too deep in to just drop it. I’d like some resolution, preferably with Kei and Hikari ending it Romeo and Juliet style.

Haha yea I still can’t stop it, but one problem I really have with this anime is that I keep thinking that too!
Whenever I just hear Kei’s voice open I think LULU. IT’S LULU. So whenever Kei fails, it feels like Lulu is failing. I really want Tadashi’s character song though D: it was so cute.
