No question about it: Kimi ni Todoke rocks!!! (But I had to ask “Why?” anyhow)

Oh, give it a few more episodes…
I think it’s obvious I like me some shoujo, especially when there’s a coupling worth supporting and mush factors are low enough, so Kimi ni Todoke and Sawako X Kazehaya (*squeals randomly*) was set to be the treat of this season for me =D Loved the 1st episode and absolutely <3<3<3<3<3 the second – after the reason I found this show a ‘refreshing’ (I’ll have to find a way to use this word less) change in the genre from recent shoujo offerings hit me during the episode that I just had to start blabbing about it here after my longest unplanned hiatus yet! (And if a show inspires me to post something after 2-3 months it has to be good! *ignores the last post*)
Since I tend to get all wordy and misdirected with my posts, I’ll be focusing my blatherings on two points, namely our two lead characters:

1) Kazehaya: Where Miracle Train fails miserably Kimi ni Todoke delivers a guy character worthy of my interests! Granted his character’s a tad on the “too good to be true makes every guy around him and in RL look like pitiful trash” end of the niceness scale, and ‘perfect’ characters generally tick me off (especially when, for the sake of ‘character development’, they reveal him as less than perfect later on), but there’s also the touch of the “pure pure boy” (lol) about him (*kyaaa his blush in ep.2!!!*) and how he stands up for Sawako (+++points) which balances him right into my DO WANT range ;P

*I never really get it whenever a guy is described as 爽やかsawayaka = “refreshing” (it’s used for ice-creams and cold drinks as well so I guess it’s the same ‘refreshing’ that I know of) and I always associated with an image of the guy with the wind blowing through his hair… *starts losing self in a fantasy* Kazehaya’s definitely helping with the concept though =P
**I still can’t believe it’s Namikawa Daisuke!!! And I thought after Hetalia I’d never get the retard moe image of Italy away from his voice but there isn’t a trace of it in Kazehaya at all (Thankfully
)
Okay, so Kazehaya’s more like delusional fangirl fodder for me, the key point in what I like about Kimi ni Todoke so far lies more with…

2) Sawako: What sets Sadwako apart from the other hopeless shoujo protagonists (who conventionally could never end up with the lead male but in due course does so anyways to please the readers/viewers) isn’t her horror-film-esque aura (done before, and not even as well), but her own resolve in improving herself for the sake of generally being liked by the people around her who unjustly shun her for her outward appearance, and not specifically to be liked by the guy of her interest. Of course along the way she learns that there’s more than just the simple ‘respect’ and reverance she feels for Kazehaya and his open personality and perhaps then her quest to better herself gains that extra ‘goal’

The typical shoujo story we’ve been fed for a few seasons so far have the order reversed, sad shoujo protagonist has feelings for a guy she can’t attain just yet, so strives to change herself to meet that goal (with varying circumstances and results). Sawako really just wants to be a more approachable person and break the walls seperating herself and her classmates for the simple sake of bettering herself (for now anyways). Comparitively, gals like Kyoko (Skip Beat) who wanted to push herself into stardom for revenge (!!!) and Kotoko (Itazura na Kiss) who pushed hard despite her mountains of shortcomings to become a nurse of all things for the sake of the guy she’s madly in love with just seem to have slightly ‘impure’ motivations, shall we say? In the end all of these girls turned out for the better (it’s only been 2 eps of Kimi ni Todoke but I can’t imagine Sawako turning out any way else) by the magic that is shoujo! after putting in the ‘required’ effort so one might argue that the ends justify the cause, but I’m just pointing out that Sawako’s motivations that sets her apart (- hence why she rocks!).
*Ironically, though I wasn’t usagijen-raging on Kotoko back when watching Itazura, now with Sawako on the table I can see clearer now what the rage was about =/ (*shakes head at Kotoko* Nonetheless I still love Itazura na Kiss because I’m secretly a sap =P) I guess I’ll make up for it by supporting Sawako all the way in her quest to become her Naritai Jibun!!!
Add some kick-ass side-characters (’kick-ass’ might be an exaggeration, but you’ve got to give them credit for standing up for Sawako at the end of ep.2. The way the rest of the class was treating here I was hoping she’d develop Sadako-like powers and curse them all to hell *raeg*):

I really to remember their names and stop calling them “Sawashiro” and “the emotional one”

Whoever the new guy is I’m keeping an eye on him XD Gotta appreciate a guy who couldn’t care less about peer pressure and likes his cookies ;P
… and you’ve got a recipe for the best show this season ! Well, here’s hoping anyhow =P (Geez, it’s only been 2 episodes)

[...] issa-sa’s pretty much covered what makes Sawako awesome compared to other shoujo heroines *cough*Kotoko*cough* and why she ROCKS. I mean, where in the world of shoujo manga have you seen a girl who doesn’t let her world revolve around one guy, whose actions are driven by the noble desire to become a better person each day of her life? Not an ordinary sight, I should say. [...]
