Of Hachiko, Nana, and Fail in Tokyo

This is Shibuya. I think. Kinda hard to tell one part of Tokyo from another from my pics -_-”
Day 2 of my End of Summer (WRRY???) weeaboo travels brought me from Nagoya to Tokyo in less than 8 hours! (Total time spent in trains should’ve amounted to about 6 hours. the rest was stopping at Shizuoka along the way to grab a bentou lunch, and deciding that the weather was too bad for my planned stop to gaze at Mt Fuji). And after arriving in Tokyo sometime in the afternoon and being subjected to the mind bogglingly disorientating mass of coloured lines (exaggerated much?) that is supposed to represent Tokyo’s train system, I decided it’d be safest for me to just stick to the light green Yamanote line for the rest of the day (and perhaps the rest of my time in Tokyo) since it’s basically a round trip around the city.
First stop, Shibuya (I know I have this picture right. Ignore the finger) where… I really had nothing better to do than to be swamped by the early evening crowd and wander about looking for Hachiko(’s statue) because of NANA… well seriously, I couldn’t really think of that many things to do while in Tokyo off the top of my head after all
Don’t ask, I just couldn’t help puking a little LOL-ing at this one.
After wandering about around the Hachiko exit of Shibuya station, I finally realized I had been circling around and around the famed monument for a quite a while without realizing it -_-” So, tah-dah, Hachiko, probably the most famous (?) waiting spot in all of Shibuya in memory of the loyalty displayed by one fine specimen of man’s best friend… (I’m trying to remember if cute-sy semi-annoying Nana from NANA lived up to this nickname)
Speaking of NANA…
Those who’ve watched the anime/read the manga probably recognize the name of this place, and I’m pretty sure this is the place the Jackson Hole in NANA is based on. After reading the volume of the manga where they were pimping out the actual place out at the end (they did it in the anime too I think, but that would be giving Shizue Nana some form of credit), I decided it should be worth a visit. Well, I only had some odd information in moonrunes I googled to go upon (which was probably outdated), and after getting off at Choufu (調布) station and ‘reaching’ the spot indicated by the rough online map I had (I actually passed it several times before -_-”), I realized that the place has either shut down or moved… Since the building where it was supposedly housed in was err, gone.
Jackson Burger. Tastes a whole lot better than it looks from the pic. Or I was just really hungry then.
Phoned the place up to confrm that Jackson Burger Hole still exists (I accidentally messed up and asked if it was Jackson ‘Burger‘, since dinner was all on my mind at that time -_-” The guy who picked up the call didn’t sound too amused to have the place made to sound liek a fast food joint…), and was now on the other side of the station. Had the ‘famed’ Jackson Burger for dinner supper (place was packed the first time I reached there). Too add to the fail experience, not only did my backpack-toting otaku self look sorely out of place in the cowboy bar setting of the place (I didn’t dare take any pictures after the burger. Pretty cool interior I have to say, albeit a little cramped), since I’m ‘underaged’ by Japanese law (20), I had to order an cup of oolong tea just to sit at the bar ORZ At least I got some was (salty) nachos…
After the rather sad interesting experience at Jackson Hole, and ascertaining that the hotels in Choufu were way beyond my budget (and I didn’t se a single capsule hotel/internet cafe), I decided to go back to the Yamanote line and do a little Tokyo night roaming. Not that I could do much since it was drizzling the entire time…
This is what Shinjuku looks like at night, in the rain, and through the shoddy lens of a n00b phoographer.
I had more pictures of Shinjuku and its skyscrapers from that night, but they all turned out like crap. And I didn’t really walk too far because fo the rain (and I forgot to research which buildings CLAMP last destroyed in X).
Harhar, Sunshine City… At night. Gettit? (OTL)
Got to Ikebukuro, and though I knew it was way late, I still wanted to at least know where Otome Road was for the next day. The cop I asked sent me Sunshine City way when I asked how to get to the Animate store (that’s as much research as I probably did), though he did ask me if I knew the place was obviously closed for the night…
Assuming you got off at the correct side of Ikebukuro station, it really shouldn’t be a problem getting to Sunshine City – at night at least, since all you have to do is follow the blue glow of this building next to it. And basking under its glow…
Otome Road. At night. When all the stores are closed and the streets are mostly deserted and it was slightly creepy. Nothing much of interest to do at that time of night (and all the stores close at about 8:30 or something), so I tracked back to one of the many internet cafes I passed along the way…
That’s all for today. Coming up next post: The dullest post on Akihabara, ever!

So Shizue Nana’s been eating all those Jackson Burgers. No wonder she’s so fat. It’s a shame the cameras can’t escape her immense gravitational field.

Oh the drizzle sucks
And that burger looks really really gross orz
And yes, the Yamanote line saves baby kittens.
Looking forward to your Akihabara post~ \o/

HOLY SHIT. Sunshine City is where i stayed during my visit to Tokyo.
Nice place right in front of the Animate shop, and Otome road was one of the first otaku places i ever visited. Kinda odd that i think of it since i dislike BL and all the shops there were full of it. Now that i think of it i only remember seeing alot of girls in one of those shops where i was the only boy in it………

Man, Otome Road reminds me of a Japanese Anime version of a seedy place in Adelaide I once visited. When I stayed in Adelaide there was a woman screaming from down the block from my hotel, which was quite disturbing. I suppose Otome Road is much safer, but only just.
I’ve never watched or read Nana so I don’t really get the reference here, but I hope you enjoyed yourself in Shibuya. My only knowledge of the area comes from playing The World Ends With You…

giant lawls at the power of those fruits

O.O You went to the Jackson Hole…And now I must crawl into a hole somewhere and be emo for two hours, because that is just not fair!
September 18, 2008 @ 6:42 am
Otome Road! When I stayed there my hotel was pretty near. There are lots of K-books there… I thought it would have been better off being called K-Rd or something.
Looking forword to “the dullest post on Akihabara, ever!”

one look at the burger and I thought it was Moss burger, then I suddenly craved for one D: Yummy juicy burgers ftw! lol @ Jackson hole XD
Also, the first anime/manga that pops into my mind with the mention of Shibuya is GALS. I don’t think I ever knew about Shibuya before watching the anime/reading the manga. Did you ever get to Animate, and by any chance get any of those ToshoSen cellphone strap goodies?
September 18, 2008 @ 10:41 am
Oh man. Jackson Burgers. Fortunately I was not subjected to the horrors of Shizue Nana because I am watching the NANA DVDs.
September 18, 2008 @ 2:07 pm
@kanzeon & amayalee: Start saving and come here!
@Baka-Raptor: If only I could have a job getting paid to host useless after show segments and eating burgers for a living…
@Cokematic: I ‘loved’ the Yamanote Line so much, I spent an hour sleeping on it when the weather was really sucky and ended back up at the station I started at XD
@EvilDevil & otou-san: Don’t laugh at the Power of Fruits (and wannabe ikemen, lawl)!
@Setsuna-san & Ruki: Why does everyone stay in Ikebukuro near Otome Road whenever they visit Tokyo? And yea, they don’t call it Otome Road for nothing (though with all the K-Books there, K-Road would sound appropriate too)
@Asperger’s Anime Blogger: Most places in the city looks seedier at night… At least I felt a whole lot safer than my night in Nagoya -_-”
@usagijen: I only saw ToshoSen plastic folders (and the uber expensive book case thingie) there! And yea, I was half keeping a look out for Gals in Shibuya the short time I was there hunting for Hachiko
@The Sojourner: If I was any more thick-faced, I’d have asked the bartender if his name was Satou Kouichi -_-”

Okay, I never knew Jackson Hole really exists.. O_o; I know Vivienne Westwood’s goods are, but not that too, LOL. Should go there next time..
Btw I don’t think they will check how old you are to buy alcoholic drinks (and/or cigarette)? Since I’m supposed to be underage too (19) but nobody cared. ^^; Tried BlackStone Cherry and it sucked. Seven Star was nice though.
September 18, 2008 @ 8:59 pm
@danie: Actually, not only did they not check, they immediately asked if I wanted beer… But since I hate that stuff and I’m cheapass, I had the tea and looked acted like the kid that I am XD
September 18, 2008 @ 11:53 pm
Did you take up on the FREE HUGS offer when you at Shibuya? I sure did, since it was the only opportunity I’d ever get to embrace a Japanese girl, even if they were on the chubby side ;P
September 19, 2008 @ 7:50 am
*LOL* Power of Fruits. Which is actually pretty good but that slogan is just hilarious when placed under a bunch of metrosexual-looking models.
September 19, 2008 @ 4:45 pm
@Shin: Nobody wants my hugs, even if they are free.
September 19, 2008 @ 4:54 pm
@Shin: The only time I saw a FREE HUGS offer was in Shinsaibashi here… And it was by a rather sadly ignored guy -_-”
@Caitlin: I’d still laugh at them without the slogan
@Asperger’s Anime Blogger: Same here! XD

Oh man, you’re bringing back memories, issa.
I stayed in Shinjuku in March for my holidays, Sunroute Shinjuku Hotel, 3 mins away from the hugeass station, (which I actually had a good time wandering around in) and 2 mins away from the local SOFT branch. Good times, Good times.
C’mon Akiba! Fait-o!

You know, I still hadn’t realized you were in Japan until now. Why is everyone but me going there? :envyyy:

Thanks for sharing!
From the pedestrian crossing photograph, Shibuya looks packed. Was it easy to travel around, without anyone bumping into you? Also, I think jackson burger doesn’t look very appetizing but meh it’ll do for any hungry soul. Where’s the coke or set meal? XD
June 13, 2009 @ 1:18 pm
Could you post instructions on how to locate the new jackson hole restaurant at chofu? or roughly how to get there.
thanks

It’s been almost a year since I’ve been there and my memory’s fuzzy, but as far as I remember you get out at the north exit (that’s the side of the station that has more activity. It used to be on the south side but has since moved ) Choufu station on the Keioh (?) line and … walk a fair bit in a direction perpendicular to the railway line past through the centre of activity until you reach a main road in front of you… Walk down that road to your right and it’s a corner lot along that road.
Okay, very sketchy directions I know, and I wish I could give you more landmarks etc. But I was dark and rainy that night and I was tired and hungry so forgive my hair-brainedness -_-”
