Natsume Yuujin Chou 1: I’m not going to convince anyone to watch this, but what the heck

Chi’s Sweet Home episode 123456: Chi, Sees Spirits.
Something about Natsume Yuujinchou (Translates to The Natsume Book of Friends… Yea, I think I’ll stick to the Japanese title) just made me want to post this on impulse. Perhaps it’s because it’s the first series this Summer on my “Well, I’ll give this a shot” list that actually exceeded my initial expectations of it (okay, it helped that I had no idea what to expect from it n the first place -_-”), the first that actually made me go “Yes, this is going in my curiously short watchlist” instead of “Err… If it’s just for the seiyuu, I dunno…”
The straightforward setup: Boy sees spirits, boy is chased by spirits because his late grandma made contracts with them once upon a time but she never bothered to utilize them (because spirits are just hanging about this world waiting to be enslaved), with the help of cat spirit he accidentally releases, boy takes it upon himself to free spirits from their contract with late granny. (Found it kinda cool that late granny went around bashing said spirits with a baseball bat. This when she still was still in school and not a granny, mind)
At any rate, it’ll probably be more interesting than Spice & Wolf?
Like Someday’s Dreamers 2, this show had that soothing village feel in its setting (oh, I can see a lot of you packing your bags and leaving for the city now…). From what it looks like, the show is going to be rather episodic (monster of the week much? Yea, yea) with Takashi and the fat cat from Sketchbook Nyanko dealing with a new bunch of contracted spirits. Its’ like the happier version of Tactics really (it’s not called the Book of Friends for nothing), though them spirits may have a nasty streak in them, the overal feel of the show isn’t too dark. It’ll be too much too hope for Natsume Yuujinchou to be the next Mushishi perhaps, but there’s enough of a good impression from the episode that’s booking it a spot on my watchlist at the moment.
(And I still don’t get why people thought it reminded them of Bleach -_-”)

Now I remember why does it remind me of Bleach! It’s because of one of the ED themes there, which is sung by the same singer, Atari Housuke. It shows Ichigo on the grass, just like the ED of Natsume Yuujin-chou

Is that so?
It didn’t remind me of bleach at all. Good to see someone else blogging this! =D

“with the help of cat spirit he accidentally releases”
In his full form he sure is not like cat at all. Maybe a rat ?

Bah, I didn’t really like this one. I dunno… I guess everything looked so plain, and Natsume seemed like he had no emotions at all.

It is like Bleach! The entire spirit thing, etc, and there’s more but I’m too lazy to pick them out. But anyway, it did have a nice feel to it, but it just doesn’t perk my interest

Okay, after re-watching this episode, it’s not like Bleach at all, but the cat is like Kon

Noooo!!! What happened to cute Chi!!! It over ate and grew to that size. (T_T)

You underestimate your powers of persuasion issa-sa. You’ve got my vote! I was going to watch this anyway, but still…;)

Mokke?!

@metatron: Well thank goodness the similarity only lied there.
@Ez: Don’t think I’ll blog it since as much as I liked this episode, I failed to even say why in this post. My biggest blogging failure is my inability to come up with a half decent post if I’m not meaning to make fun of the show -_-”
@karnot: A rat is fine too? (*groans*)
@biankita: That usually happens when I’m following a ton of other shows at the same time… Now’s not that kind of season though.
@Taiyaki: ‘Plain’ sort of suits the show imho. Something to contrast the sugariness of the rest of my watchlist this season
@blissmo: If you kill Kon in one of your comics, we will be BFFs forever regardless of what we watch
@Hynavian: Mr Yamada should have gone for the low-fat kitty food, lol.
@Omisyth: LOL, this post isn’t going to convince those who wouldn’t touch the show to do so, but I’m glad a lot more people than I expected seem to like it already
@Shin: No lolis here.

Aww, I was hoping you’d blog this. Granted, you’re not going to make any converts – people will know by the end of the first ep whether or not this show is for them. But that isn’t really the point for a show like this.
Besides, you have your opening hook for each entry “Episode xxxxx – Chi Gets Fat/ODs on Manjuu/Kicks Major Butt”
After 2 eps, I think the most impressive thing about this show (of many things) is how well they’re bringing out Reiko’s character in her reasonably short sequences.
