Antique Bakery and how this can’t possibly be yaoi (at least not how we know it)

DO NOT WANT? (But it’s CAKE – and that’s no lie!)
It’s not like I was meaning to watch this show at all, but I gave it a shot… =P
The first episode of Antique Bakery was hilarious, in all sorts of intentional/unintentional ways. On one hand, there was so much melodrama in it (organ music??? And I totally expected Tachibana’s parents to freak when he said he was opening a gay bar bakery, but instead they offered to invest in it XD) that I would’ve rolled my eyes at if I wasn’t too busy laughing at how its absurdly intertwined with the yummy characters cakes XD (”Woe is me, I had a bad past – now I’m going to open a bakery!” “Woe is me, I can’t box anymore – *r@pes eats cake*!“)
On the other hand, this show actually fulfilled a something I was thinking a while ago that I never thought would ever come true:
But I do wonder if one day perhaps we’ll have a WTF BL show featuring a non-bishie male lead who spends his time in gay bars stalking prey… *shudders*
Well, the non-bishie part goes out the window because there’s no such thing as a non-bishie male character in a show obviously aimed for non-male viewers. But I really never thought I’d actually see a gay bar in anime that wasn’t meant as a direct parody, ever (and it sure as hell was more entertaining than the sleep inducing 2 episodes of Bartender I tried) much less Shinjuku 2-chome (which I really just learnt about from this show. BL = educational?)
What’s this, a homophobe in this BL setup that’s not likely to be converted to ‘the other side’? (Or is he?)
But what someone like Shin wants to know is of you may want to know is, Is Antique Bakery gay enough? Well this episode itself blows all gay quotient in anime ever, for the very fact that it actually focused on what may or may not be what the gay scene in Japan is like, and the character in question here is more in line with the openly gay (with flamboyance levels under control) guys in RL rather than them angspots in denial plaguing the likes of Junjou Romantica.
But wait, who wants to watch a gay documentary when there’s all them flowery BL shows out there that feature all the ‘actual’ raunchy boy on boy loving that we could ever dream of wanting?
This is why subs are ‘necessary’ XD
Well, if your more into the entire false fantasy of entertwining cheesy romance with flimsy premises and the inevitable buttsecks that is yaoi, then from the looks of it, the only thing Antique Bakery will end up offering you is the drama/lulz/organ music (and Miyano Mamoru. Yes this line is meant for you, friend who does not read this blog but thinks the guys voice is ‘teh sex’
)
And that sort of answers why, in my quick glance at this show, there doesn’t seem any way that this show is going to end up like your typical run-of-the-mill yaoi/BL show. The fact that you can’t really switch Ono/any of his potential prey with an equivalent character of the opposite gender without compromising the essence of their relationship should be a point. Granted there seems to be some BL-like antics coming up later, but at least I’m hoping it actually comes off as being ‘believable’ for once and not devolve into a pile of cheese(cake
). And please no buttsecks for the sake of buttsecks -_-”
Well in any case, if the melodrama doesn’t do it for me, there’ll still be the cake… Mmmm…
P.S. Funny how Junjou Romantica mentioned all those places to visit in Osaka, but not Doyama =P
P.P.S. Now it looks like all I have left yet to see in BL is an actual flamboyantly faaaabulous protagonist (though shows like Code Geass make up for that). Who knows what’s going to come out in the future that’ll make me blockquote this one…

Miyano Mamoru’s voice fills in all the buttsecksing they need in this show from Junjou Romantica XD…
Anyway, I also lol watching this show

issa-sa, I will watch this show and I may laugh and like it like you do …. or, I might totally hate it XD

@metatron: LOL, too bad Miyano only had a handful of (slightly emo) lines this ep
@blissmo: Something tells me you’re not gonna like what you see… Oh well, to return the favour I’ll give Blade of the Immortal a shot as well ;P

I just watched the 1st episode the other night and I think this show will be much more than just BL stuff. The character development seems a little flaky but it’s just the 1st episode. Once the whole cast comes together, I think it will get better.

Is there man-service? (fanservice for girls?)
July 7, 2008 @ 9:51 pm
@Caitlin: Yea, the series does look like it will get better, though hopefully it’ll involve less cheesy organ music…
@Jacob Martin: Err… I dunno, was too distracted by the cake-service XD

hurray for cake pr0n!! I’m gonna go rewatch this later with subs, hopefully I’ll have a spark of creative inspiration to make a post XD

Memories of that Death Note yaoi eroge where Light’s penis is used as a donut holder is coming back to me.

I am trying to decide if I am the first male respondent on this post or not (because who knows if the person calling themselves Jacob Martin is not actually called Jacob Martin in real life!), but as I actually sat down and watched the series, I felt compelled to comment (belatedly).
I actually rather liked it, to be honest. I didn’t make a post about it lest I risk the wrath of the fangirls inadvertently, but even though I was uncomfortable during all the “gay bits,” I simply told myself “well, this is how a non-yuri-liking girl feels like when they watch an episode of Simoun/Marimite/Onii-sama e…/etc.”, because, well, I can’t really deny girls their man-love if I can’t deny me my girl-love (or deny them, because there’s a lot of yaoi/yuri crossover, apparently). That’s just hypocritical.
It was funny when appropriate, it was amusing to see guys get cutesy wacky facial expressions (the exaggerated style of expressions in Antique Bakery are awesome and I demand a female character to make one, so I can feel better), and I flipped out when I heard the pipe organ. All it needs now is a harpsichord and a giant cake and I’ll be set.

@usagijen: The episode inspired me to have more cake! (Okay, I had to make do with cheesecake ice-cream, but that’s good too ;D)
@biankita: It wouldn’t be dry if it were in my mouth… (Minds out of gutters please)
@Jacob Martin: Who wouldn’t? XD (blissmo maybe…)
@Setsuna-san: So’s my entire life ;P
@EvilDevil: If show can give me a negative image of desserts, I’m not watching it.
@Shin: And I was just thinking of dropping by Mr Donuts…
@OGT: As far as I can see, at least half the comments here are by guys (!) so you should feel safe here… Or CAN you… ;P
Though the story seems aimed squarely at the female market, it’s nice to see that it’s getting attention from the likes of the more open minded males as well as ‘people who wouldn’t touch anything ghey with a 10 mile stick’.
(Though it sounds like you want to see a giant cake in Nodame Cantabile more than anything XD)
July 10, 2008 @ 2:29 pm
Noo~ I wasn’t going to watch this… but now that I heard Miyano Mamoru-kun’s voice was in it, I don’t know what to do… T-T
But the cake in that last pic does look really tasty.

@issa-sa: Well, I started watching Antique Bakery simply to shove myself right into the forefront of the BL thing. The fact that I personally would rather my cake porn involve more girls is fairly irrelevant; when I make my final evaluation of the series (whenever that is) I’m going to shove my (probably totally unjustified) uncomfortableness into a different corner and judge it on its own merits. I’m sure some GLBT organization is preparing some kind of strike assault on my house as I type this.
That said, I don’t see me getting as into the relationships of Antique Bakery as I am into the ones in Itazura na Kiss, but I can certainly appreciate them on a less id level (perhaps a superego level? Freud doesn’t tell me how to answer this!).
(do you see now why I have trouble talking about this?)

Episode 4’s out, and they’re breaking out the drama bat. It’s not fully BL, but they sure love to play with the stereotypes. Also, it looks like the other reason Chikage shows up in this show has become apparent, by Episode 4. Just watch the reactions of the girls when they see mannerly men speaking in stereo; we haven’t seen reactions from women like this since Ouran Host Club’s Hikaru and Kaoru’s act.
issa-sa: I think it’s more there’s that slapstick humor, as well as the lack of explicit yaoi (think Junjou Romantica) that it has going for it, as well as a drama which flows more naturally due to Tachibana’s past.
Jacob: Yes, there’s a bit of manservice for the girls (see Episode 4)… but it’s more cake-pr0n. Man, but there’s a lot of cake-pr0n…
OGT: Look at Episode 4. The girls mooning over two handsome men, dressed identically, being courteous and servile do the trick. I think that’s Tachibana’s method of attracting women as well.. and damn if it doesn’t work.
Shin: Is there a reason you have Kagami blushing over a BL doujin of Sosuke and Gauron, or is it just a happy coincidence?
