Supporting the War?

So if you take a look to the sidebar, you should see some pretty awesome Toshokan Sensou banners have been added in support of my favourite show this season! (I might as well make that official, since that’ll most certainly be the case unless, god forbid, some major suckage occurs in the final few episodes *sobs, it’s ending!* – yea, and I’ll suddenly love S.A. till the day I die *dies of sarcasm*) Or more specifically, in support of the official DVDs being released this August! Woo-hoo! (I love the badass Iku cover -?- btw)
Thanks to the Queen of Toshokan Sensou Fangurling, usagijen for the news =P
Unfortunately, I too face the same dillema about whether or not to purchase the DVDs myself, since if I do, that’ll be a series of many firsts – the first time I’ll “experienced falling in love with an anime so much to the point of wanting to buy the DVDs and rewatch it to no end” to quote usagijen and well, the first time I’ve ever ought a DVD in my life… ORZ
So yes, I’m opening that “I’ve never actually supported the industry via direct purchase and have in fact been contributing to its ruin by relying on fansubs” can of worms/BS. And my hesitation on whether or not to purchase said DVDs now can certainly be viewed as blasphemous hypocrisy on my part.
But to be honest, it has never occurred to me to own anime in any sort of solid form before, after becoming so accustomed to watching off the same screen I devote hours of my day to. Plus I’m not much of a rewatcher of shows (hence my almost empty hard drive), preferring to take the sweet moments of my first time watching my favourite shows with me for the rest of my life (hence my skewed perception on many shows and what I like about them, I suppose) – add that to the fact that I’m so unpicky that I’ll always have something new to watch whenever I have the time -_-” And unless I want to rewatch sub-less scenes with my moonspeak tutor for the rest of my life, I may just have to pass on these official Japanese DVDs (until perhaps, my own listening skills reach the required level to fully enjoy them).
But that’s the ‘practical’ aspect of the matter (when it comes to myself, mind. To each viewer, his or her own, no?). Of course I could just fork out the cash just for the sake of supporting the industry (and as material proof of being a true fan! That stuff about being a true fan at heart needing no proof is BS after all!) which many will say is the right thing to do… But for now, my wallet says NO… not YET anyways… So even with all those tempting extra goodies, I’manot pre-ordering anything atm… *sighs at the thought of them goodies*
Ah well, what’s a stingy panda to do… Guess I’ll just limit myself to joining that Banner Campaign for the DVD release since I happen to be one of those “lucky bastards in Japan” jen mentions (Don’t hate me, the moonrunes are killing me enough!) Now unless my own Japanese reading skills are shittier than I thought (or Rikaichan failed me), I think I’ve registered properly for the campaign and set up the banners correctly… (you can see the rest of them here. I just chose my 3 favourite characters from the show =P) Hopefully, the banners may induce readers into buying the DVDs even if I’m not leading by example currently? For now, I’m more interested in following the source material (books/manga for me, need to be held in hand to fully enjoy, hence why I’m willing to buy them – second hand at least), speaking of which, a new one is being announced!
Now there goes my monies…

We all need to show support sometimes. =D
However I’d only purchase high quality subbed versions. No dubs, and certainly any certified by ODEX *shudder*. Problem is, it’s really hard to find clean, official and good subs in Malaysia (seeing that it’s pirate ‘industry’ is the biggest in the world).

pfft you lucky
dawgpanda!and know what, I *might* just get my hands on the giveaways for the banner campaign, if any of my officemates will still be in Japan by the time the gifts are sent. I’m soo regretting not joining the first banner campaign, SIGH.

@Ez: Perhaps I can blame the environment back home for my inability to actually support the legal industry? ;P (Give me some time…)
@usagijen: Ooo, hopefully at least one of us gets them goodies then
– and if your officemates aren’t in the country then, I’ll HAPPILY accept the gifts for you XD
Have to thank you for bringing my attention to the Campaign (AND the official site OTL), and I too wish I joined during the first campaign T_T

you are too lucky to be in japan. as i mentioned to usagijen, i am at the point of contacting a cousin who i have not seen or contacted for almost 7-8 years just to have this pre-ordered on my behalf.
anyway, i am with you… i cannot be called a true anime fan because i rely solely on fansubs. unless i really really like series where i end up buying the merchandise like manga or figurines… the last time i bought an original DVD was CCS and before that were VHS tapes of ranma 1/2 in the 90s. i am at the point that i am rationalizing “well, i never really spend so much money on these types of stuff because i haven’t found an anime i can watch on and on forever so i might as well.” to hell with it, you’re there already!!! pre-order already! which is more than what schmucks like me outside japan could do.

@biankita: Your fan heart is burning so brightly! I’ve been saving up for the novels which is why I’m reluctant to get the DVDs now (but if I wait till they’re all released, I’ll be missing out on the juicy pre-order items…)
But if you really want someone here to preorder on your behalf, I’ll be glad to offer help – though since this will be my first time I’ll have some things to figure out first…

You be sure to let me know if this gets any better

@issa-sa: thanks… as i said, i’m still thinking about it (but i really want to *calendar… calendar…*). considering the conversion rate in my country to the japanese yen, that’s quite a splurge when i checked the chara-ani site. actually, the reason why i’m considering my cousin is that he sends in “care packages” to his parents once in a while and that’s a hell of a save on the shipping
i’m still mulling…
